Da Nang
A long beach between the mountains and the sea, with the lantern town of Hoi An down the coast.
Da Nang is central Vietnam's beach city, with a wide sweep of sand along its front, the Marble Mountains at one end and the Son Tra peninsula at the other. The old trading port of Hoi An, with its yellow shophouses and lanterns, is half an hour south; the imperial city of Hue is a pass away to the north.
Why go
For an easy, sunny base with a beach on the doorstep and two of Vietnam's old towns, Hoi An and Hue, within reach. Hoi An's old quarter at dusk, when the lanterns come on and the boats float candles on the river, is a scene to build a trip around.
And for the hills: the Golden Bridge held up by stone hands at Ba Na, the Hai Van pass on the road to Hue, and the caves and karst further north for the adventurous.
Highlights
What people go for, in no particular order.
01Hoi An's old town
The car-free lanes of merchant houses, assembly halls and the Japanese covered bridge, with tailors, cafés and lantern-makers in the shophouses. Evenings on the river are the reason to stay overnight.
02My Khe beach
The long sand along Da Nang's front, with surf schools, seafood restaurants and the mountains of Son Tra at the northern end.
03The Golden Bridge
The walkway held aloft by two giant stone hands in the Ba Na Hills, reached by cable car above the cloud forest west of the city.
04The Dragon Bridge and the river
The bridge across the Han river shaped as a dragon, which breathes fire and water on weekend nights while the riverside fills with people watching.
05The Marble Mountains and Son Tra
Five limestone hills with cave pagodas and views along the coast south of the city, and the forested peninsula with its giant Lady Buddha statue and langurs to the north.
06My Son and Hue
The ruined Cham temple towers in a jungle valley inland from Hoi An, and the imperial citadel and royal tombs of Hue over the Hai Van pass.
