Muscat
White houses between the mountains and the sea, and the whole of Oman behind them.
Muscat is a low, white city strung along the coast between the Hajar mountains and the Gulf of Oman. It has kept its scale and a low skyline: the old port of Mutrah still has its souk and corniche, and the forts of the old town guard a harbour where the sultan's palace faces the water.
Why go
For a capital that feels like a country rather than a project. The Grand Mosque is one of the great buildings of the Gulf; the opera house, the souk and the fish market are lived-in rather than staged; and the sea is a few minutes from anywhere.
And as the door to Oman: the wadis with their pools, the dunes of the Wahiba Sands, the mountain villages of Jebel Akhdar, the forts of Nizwa and the turtles at Ras Al Jinz, all within a day's drive.
Highlights
What people go for, in no particular order.
01The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
Marble courtyards, a vast carpet, a chandelier the size of a room and gardens around it, on the road in from the airport. Visiting hours for non-Muslims are limited, so check them before you go; modest dress, and a headscarf for women.
02Mutrah and its souk
The old harbour with its corniche, the blue-domed mosque on the waterfront and the covered souk behind, selling frankincense, silver and fabric under wooden ceilings.
03Old Muscat
The walled town around the Al Alam palace, with the Portuguese forts on the rocks either side of the harbour and the National Museum across the square.
04The Royal Opera House
A concert hall in Omani stone and wood on the Qurum road, with a season of opera, orchestras and Arab music, and tours by day.
05The coast and the dolphins
Boats from Marina Bandar Al Rowdha go out for dolphins in the morning and along the cliffs to the coves of Bandar Khayran; the beaches at Qurum and Qantab are the afternoon.
06Wadis, dunes and mountains
Wadi Shab's pools and Wadi Bani Khalid are a drive down the coast; the Wahiba Sands and the Jebel Akhdar plateau are overnight trips; Nizwa's fort and Friday livestock market are a day.

Getting around: Muscat
Taxis and ride-hailing cover the city, which is long and thin along the coast; a hire car is the easiest way to see it and the country beyond. Roads are good and distances honest.
Wadis and dunes want a four-wheel drive and often a guide; hotels and local operators arrange day and overnight trips. Ferries and internal flights reach Musandam and Salalah.
