Cappadocia
Rock valleys, cave villages and a sky full of balloons at dawn.
Cappadocia is a region of central Anatolia where volcanic ash eroded into cones, chimneys and ravines, and where people carved homes, churches and whole underground cities into the soft rock. Göreme is the village at the centre; the balloons rise over it most mornings at first light.
Why go
The landscape is the draw: valleys of pink and cream rock, fairy chimneys with doors in them, painted Byzantine chapels in the cliffs and hotels cut into the hillsides. A balloon flight at dawn shows all of it at once.
It rewards a few days rather than one. Walks through the Rose and Love valleys, the underground cities at Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, the pottery town of Avanos on the river and the castle rock at Uçhisar each take a half day.
Highlights
What people go for, in no particular order.
01A balloon at dawn
Dozens of balloons lift off before sunrise and drift over the valleys and chimneys for an hour. Flights depend on the wind and are called off when it is wrong, so allow a spare morning.
02The Göreme open-air museum
A cluster of rock-cut churches and monasteries with frescoes from the tenth and eleventh centuries, on a hillside just outside the village.
03The valleys on foot
Rose Valley, Red Valley, Love Valley and Pigeon Valley are linked by paths between the chimneys, with cave chapels and orchards along the way. Sunset from the Rose Valley rim is the classic end to a day.
04The underground cities
Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı go many levels down: stables, kitchens, chapels and rolling stone doors carved for whole communities to hide in.
05Uçhisar and the cave villages
The castle rock riddled with rooms above Uçhisar, the old cave village at Çavuşin and the abandoned monastery valley of Zelve show how the rock was lived in.
06Avanos and the Ihlara valley
Avanos throws pots from the red river clay as it has for centuries; the Ihlara gorge to the south-west is a green canyon walk past churches cut into the cliff.
Areas
Where to base yourself, and what each area is like.
Göreme
The village at the centre of everything, with cave hotels, restaurants and the balloon launch fields. Convenient and busy.
Uçhisar
On the highest point, with the castle rock and views over the whole valley. Quieter and a little smarter.
Ürgüp
A larger town to the east with wine cellars, a Saturday market and hotels in its old stone quarter.
Ortahisar and Çavuşin
Smaller villages with their own rock castles and a slower pace, a short drive from Göreme.
