When is the best time to visit Istanbul and Cappadocia?
Spring and autumn. From April to June and in September and October both places are mild, with highs in the high teens to mid-twenties. Istanbul is at its wettest from October to February, and Cappadocia, on a high plateau, has cold winters, with average lows below freezing from December to February.
The two are different climates. Istanbul sits on the sea and has mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers; Nevşehir, the main town of Cappadocia, stands at 1,260 m on the Anatolian plateau, with a much wider swing between summer and winter and between day and night[1]. In July the average high is about 29 °C in both places, but Cappadocia's nights are about six degrees cooler than Istanbul's[1].
That makes spring and autumn the seasons that suit both: warm enough for Istanbul's walking and ferries, and cool enough for Cappadocia's valleys. Spring is also quieter; Istanbul stays busy in September and October[2].
How warm and wet are Istanbul and Cappadocia each month?
Istanbul (Florya) averages a high of 9.2 °C in January and 29.7 °C in August, and 88 mm of rain in December against 19 mm in July. Cappadocia (Nevşehir) runs from 4.1 °C to 29.4 °C, is dry from July to September, and has more than 300 hours of sunshine a month in June, July and August.

Climate: WMO climatological normals 1991–2020 for Florya (Istanbul, European shore) and Nevşehir (Cappadocia, 1,260 m), submitted by the Turkish State Meteorological Service[1]; mean daily maximum / minimum, monthly precipitation and sunshine, rounded. Visitors: foreign visitors entering through Istanbul, Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism[2].
Rain in Istanbul follows the winter: Florya averages 10–11 days with at least 1 mm of rain in December, January and February, and two to four in June, July and August[1]. Cappadocia's is spread from November to June, and its summers are very dry, with 7–12 mm a month from July to September[1].
For a traveller from the Gulf, Cappadocia's winter is the thing to prepare for. Nevşehir's average low is below freezing from December to February, and its average high in January is 4.1 °C[1]; pack for snow and ice as well as sun.
When do Cappadocia's balloons fly?
Whenever the weather allows, and the decision is official. Türkiye's Directorate General of Civil Aviation requires permission before every flight, forbids flying in poor visibility or near cloud, and runs a flag system: after a weather assessment for the area and time, a red flag means no flights.
The Directorate General's instruction on balloon operations sets the rules. Operators must obtain flight permission from the Directorate General before each flight; it sets limits on visibility and on distance from cloud below which balloons may not fly; and a flag decision, green, yellow or red, is announced for each sector and time after a meteorological assessment, with red meaning conditions are unsuitable and no flights take place[3]. A 2024 amendment adds that once a red or green flag decision is published, it cannot be changed on reassessment[4].
In practice, any flight can be called off on the morning, in any season. Build a spare morning or two into a Cappadocia stay if the balloon flight matters to you, and book with an operator that explains what happens if the flag is red.
When is Istanbul busiest?
From April to October. In 2025, 18,972,699 foreign visitors entered Türkiye through Istanbul; July was the busiest month, with 1,879,266, followed by October and August, and March the quietest, with 1,228,785. Every month from April to October brought more than 1.5 million.
Istanbul's visitors are spread across the year: even the quietest months, January to March, brought more than 1.2 million foreign visitors each in 2025[2]. Türkiye as a whole received 52,775,261 foreign visitors that year[2].
