How early should you get to DXB?
Three hours before departure. That is Dubai Airports' own recommendation, and the time check-in counters open. In its advice for the busiest weeks, the airport puts it the other way round: arrive no earlier than three hours before.
Dubai Airports' help pages say to arrive "at least three hours" before your flight, and that check-in counters open about three hours before the scheduled departure[1]. Its advice for the peak travel weeks — the start of the summer holidays in July 2026, and the year-end rush of 2025 — asks travellers to arrive "no earlier than three hours" before departure and to use online check-in where they can[2][3]. Read together, the target is the same: about three hours, not much more, and not less.
It is a big airport to plan around. DXB welcomed 95.2 million guests in 2025, the busiest year in its history[4], and on the busiest day of the 2025 year-end peak it expected 303,000[3].
What are the check-in and gate deadlines?
They depend on the airline, so check yours. Emirates asks you to be through passport control 90 minutes before departure and at the gate 60 minutes before in Economy or Premium Economy. flydubai closes check-in 60 minutes before departure and its boarding gates 25 minutes before.
The two Dubai-based airlines' published times, before scheduled departure
| Step | Emirates | flydubai |
|---|---|---|
| Online check-in | Opens 48 hours before, closes 90 minutes before[9] | Opens 48 hours before, closes 75 minutes before[17] |
| Airport check-in | From 24 hours before at DXB (12 hours for flights to the US)[10] | Opens 3 hours before, closes 60 minutes before[16] |
| Passport control and security | Be through 90 minutes before[9] | Not stated separately |
| At the gate | 60 minutes before in Economy and Premium Economy; 45 in First and Business[9] | Boarding starts 45 minutes before[16] |
| Gate closes | 20 minutes before, per Emirates' April 2025 advisory[15] | 25 minutes before[16] |
Airlines change these times; the airline's own page and your booking are the final word. We could not find a current Emirates page that states when its airport check-in counters close at DXB, so we do not give one.
Allow for the walk. Emirates says the gates at its Terminal 3 can be up to 20 minutes' walk away for A gates, 15 for B gates and 25 for C gates[9] — so the half hour between Emirates' passport-control time and its gate time is not spare.
When should you allow more than three hours?
At the start of school holidays, around Eid, and in the year-end rush — and whenever your airline says so. For the busiest days, both Dubai-based airlines have asked passengers to arrive four hours before departure.
- Summer 2026: Dubai Airports expected the peak to start on 2 July, about 3 million guests in the first half of the month, and more than 225,000 on the busiest day, 12 July[2].
- Year-end 2025: the peak ran from 27 November to 31 December, and Dubai Airports said only passengers would be allowed inside the terminals during peak periods, so goodbyes are said at home[3].
- Emirates asked customers flying from 2 to 5 January 2026 to arrive four hours before departure[14].
- flydubai asked passengers to arrive at least four hours before departure ahead of Eid Al Adha 2026, as reported by Khaleej Times[24].
The dates and the advice are announced ahead of each peak. On the Ministry of Education's calendar, the next school breaks are 12 to 18 October 2026 and 14 December 2026 to 3 January 2027[22]; check the Dubai Airports media centre and your airline's travel updates in the week you fly.
Check on the day (September 2026)
The National reported delays and cancellations at Dubai International and Zayed International on 3 September 2026, after renewed fighting between the United States and Iran, with airlines warning that schedules could change at short notice[23]. Look up your flight's status before you leave home.
Which terminal does your flight leave from?
Emirates flies from Terminal 3. flydubai uses Terminal 2 and, for selected flights, Terminal 3. Many other airlines use Terminal 1. Your booking says which; check it before you set off.
Dubai Airports' airline directory lists Emirates at Terminal 3, flydubai at Terminals 2 and 3, and airlines such as British Airways, Air India, IndiGo, Saudia, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines and Cathay Pacific at Terminal 1[5]. The directory is a live list, so check it for your airline.
flydubai's Terminal 3 flights have four-digit flight numbers beginning with 1 (FZ 1XXX), and flydubai sets a minimum connecting time of 120 minutes between Terminals 2 and 3[18].
Can you check in before you get to the airport?
Yes, in several ways. Both airlines offer online check-in from 48 hours before departure. Emirates also offers early bag drop at DXB from 24 hours before, city check-in, and a paid home check-in service; flydubai has a city check-in desk in Sharjah.
- Early check-in at DXB (Emirates): check in and drop bags from 24 hours before departure, or 12 hours for flights to the US. Everyone on the booking must be there in person[10].
- City Check-in (Emirates): at ICD Brookfield Place in DIFC, from 24 hours to 4 hours before your flight, open for check-in from 08:00 to 22:00; and at the Ajman Central Bus Terminal, 24 hours a day[10]. Not for flights to the US or Israel from DIFC, and not for flydubai[11]. Gulf News reported in May 2026 that the city check-in locations were temporarily closed, and Khaleej Times described them as open in July[25][26]: check Emirates' page before you rely on it.
- Home Check-in (Emirates): an agent checks you and your bags in wherever you are in Dubai or Sharjah; book at least 24 hours before your flight, and the latest home check-in is six hours before departure. Charges and who travels free are set out on Emirates' page[12].
- City Check-in (flydubai): at the flydubai Travel Shop in Sharjah, from 24 hours to 6 hours before departure, for flights from Terminals 2 and 3. There is a fee per passenger, shown on flydubai's page[19].
How do you get through passport control faster?
Use the Smart Gates if you are eligible. Dubai Airports says UAE and GCC nationals, UAE residents and visa-on-arrival visitors with biometric passports can use them, with a few exceptions. No official source says how long the queue takes; Emirates asks you to be through 90 minutes before departure.
Dubai Airports' guide lists people of determination, travellers with large pushchairs, families with children and anyone under 1.2 metres among those who cannot use the Smart Gates, and says first-time users are registered on arrival[6]. Its summer 2026 advice, though, said families with children over 12 can use them[2] — so families should check at the airport which lane applies to them.
Emirates also runs a biometric path at Terminal 3, which you register for in the Emirates app or at a check-in desk[13].
What slows people down at security?
Liquids and batteries. Dubai Airports allows liquids in hand luggage only in containers of up to 100 ml, together no more than one litre, in a clear resealable bag, and asks for spare batteries and power banks to travel in hand luggage only.
The full list of what may and may not go through security is on Dubai Airports' security and customs page[7]; the power-bank advice was repeated in its summer 2026 tips[2]. Security rules change, so read the page before you pack.
How do you get to DXB?
By road to any terminal, or by Dubai Metro to Terminals 1 and 3. The Red Line stops at Airport Terminal 3 (R13) and Airport Terminal 1 (R14); Dubai Airports does not list a Metro station for Terminal 2.
The RTA's timetable, at the time of writing, runs the Metro from 05:00 to midnight Monday to Thursday and on Saturday, from 05:00 to 01:00 on Friday, and from 08:00 to midnight on Sunday[20]; hours can be extended for public holidays and city events[8]. Dubai Airports says Metro passengers may carry up to two pieces of luggage, including hand luggage[8]. The station names are on the RTA's map[21].
On a Sunday the first train runs at 08:00[20], too late for a morning flight once the three hours are added. Check the timetable against your departure.
What does a well-timed departure look like?
- Up to 48 hours before: check in online, if your airline and route allow it[9][17].
- Three hours before: arrive at the terminal your booking names[1]; four if your airline has issued a peak-time advisory.
- About 90 minutes before: be through passport control and security, as Emirates asks[9].
- Sixty minutes before (Emirates Economy and Premium Economy) or 45 (Emirates First and Business, and flydubai boarding): be at the gate[9][16].
- Twenty-five minutes before (flydubai) or twenty (Emirates, per its 2025 advisory): the gate closes[16][15].
