Is there an official minimum connecting time at DXB?
Not one that covers everyone. flydubai publishes 120 minutes between Terminals 2 and 3 and four hours between DXB and DWC. Emirates publishes the times you must be at the gate and how long concourse changes take, but we could not find a current Emirates page that gives a minimum connection.
flydubai is explicit: the minimum connection time between Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 is 120 minutes, and between DXB and Dubai World Central (DWC) it is four hours[7]. Emirates' terminal-transfer page instead gives the ingredients: moving between its concourses takes approximately 30 minutes[1], and you must be at the gate 60 minutes before departure in Economy and Premium Economy, 45 in First and Business[2]. By our count, those two alone take 90 minutes of an Economy connection before the time from landing to the transfer area is added. The margin matters most on separate tickets, where no airline protects the connection.
Connecting at DXB: what happens and the published figures
| Your connection | What you do | Published figures |
|---|---|---|
| Emirates to Emirates, one booking | Stay airside; follow the Connections signs; bags tagged through if the connection is within 24 hours[1] | About 30 minutes between concourses; at the gate 60 minutes before (Economy)[1][2] |
| flydubai, Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 | Follow Connections to the buses; get an onward boarding pass at a connections desk if you have none[7] | Minimum 120 minutes[7] |
| Emirates to another airline in Terminal 1 or 2 | Shuttle bus from area A6, desk K or desk E, depending on your concourse[1] | None published |
| Separate tickets | Clear passport control, collect bags, go through customs, travel to your terminal and check in again[1][8] | Emirates' paid baggage transfer needs a connection of at least three hours[1] |
| DXB to DWC | Enter the UAE, collect bags and travel about 60 km by road[7][8] | flydubai minimum four hours[7] |
Figures from Emirates, flydubai and Dubai Airports on 25 September 2026. If an Emirates flight is disrupted, Emirates says it will try to rebook you on the first available connection[4].
How does a connection within Terminal 3 work?
You stay airside. Follow the Connections signs and walk, or take the airport train, to your gate; on a through booking your bags are tagged to your final destination. Between the A and C gates Emirates also runs a bus, and free buggies wait in the concourses.
Emirates flights all arrive and depart at Terminal 3, and on a through booking the airline tags your bags to your destination, so you follow the Connections signs to your next gate[1]. The B and C gates are within walking distance, and the A gates are a short airport-train ride away[8]. Emirates runs a bus between Concourses A and C from bus connection area A6 and connections desk E, and in First Class offers a car between concourses for connections under 90 minutes[1]. Its connections kiosks let you change your seat and get a boarding pass without visiting a desk[3].
What if your flights are on separate tickets?
Then you make the connection yourself. You pass UAE passport control, collect your bags, clear customs and check in again for the second flight. Emirates' paid baggage transfer service needs a connection of at least three hours; plan on more.
Emirates says that if you did not book all your flights with it, you clear immigration, collect your bags from the carousel, go through customs and take a taxi or bus to your departure terminal before checking in again[1]. It offers a paid service to move your bags to a flight from another terminal, which needs a connection of at least three hours[1]. Dubai Airports says travellers without a Dubai visa on separate tickets can ask Marhaba Services at the transfer desk to transfer their bags, for a fee[8].
Remember the other end: Dubai Airports' advice is to be at the airport three hours before departure, when check-in opens[9]. Whether you can pass passport control at all depends on your passport; our visa desk checks it against the official sources before you book.
What can you do on a long layover at DXB?
Sleep, shower, eat and let the children play without leaving the airport. Dubai Airports lists the DXB Hotel in Terminal 3, Sleepover lounges for a one-hour nap or a full night, free showers near gates B13 to B19, and a 24-hour gaming lounge.

Does Emirates give you a hotel on a long connection?
Sometimes. Emirates' Dubai Connect offers a hotel, meals and transfers when your best available connection in Dubai is between 6 and 26 hours, on qualifying Emirates tickets. You must book it at least 12 hours before your flight to Dubai, and you must be able to enter the UAE.
- Connection: between 6 and 26 hours, and it must be the best available connection, the shortest transit in Dubai for your itinerary[6].
- Ticket: both flights operated by Emirates on one ticket, with minimum fare rules; Emirates-marketed flydubai flights can qualify only from Terminal 3[6].
- Booking: add it in Manage your booking at least 12 hours before your flight to Dubai, then go to the Dubai Connect desk in Arrivals[5].
- Entry: you must be able to enter the UAE; Emirates' terms set out how entry is arranged, and our visa desk can check your case[6].
- If your flight is disrupted: Emirates says rebooked passengers with a Dubai connection of 10 to 24 hours might be eligible[4].
Can you leave the airport during a layover?
Only if you can enter the UAE, which depends on your passport. If you can, the Metro's Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3 into the city. Allow time to return, clear security and reach your gate; Dubai Airports' advice is to be back three hours before departure.
Leaving the airport means passing UAE passport control, so the first question is a visa one, which our visa desk answers against the official sources. If you can go out, the Red Line leaves from Terminals 1 and 3 and runs from 05:00 to midnight on most days, from 08:00 on Sundays[10], and our guide to getting into the city covers taxis and buses. Be back in time to check in again and clear security: Dubai Airports recommends arriving three hours before departure[9].

Corrections
- : The short answer said well over 90 minutes is safer for a connection within Terminal 3. That was our own arithmetic, not a published minimum; the answer now gives the airlines' figures and what Emirates does when a disruption makes you miss a connection.
