How early should you get to Zayed International?
Three hours is the safe minimum for most international flights, and four for the United States. Etihad's desks open four hours before departure, and in its 2025 peak-season advice it asked guests to arrive at least four hours early; for Eid Al Adha 2026 it asked for at least three.
Etihad, which is based at Zayed International, says its airport check-in desks open four hours before your flight and close 60 minutes before departure in Economy, or 45 minutes before in Business and First[1]. Arriving three hours ahead leaves two hours before the Economy desks close.
The advice for busy periods has varied. In March 2025 Etihad strongly encouraged guests to arrive at least four hours before departure during peak periods, naming the spring break, Eid Al Fitr, the Hajj season, Eid Al Adha and the summer holidays[4]. Before Eid Al Adha 2026 it advised arriving at least three hours before departure, according to The National[14]. Etihad's current pages give no single arrival time, so treat three hours as the floor and four as the peak-day figure unless your airline tells you otherwise.
What are the check-in deadlines at AUH?
Etihad closes check-in 60 minutes before departure in Economy and 45 minutes before in Business and First. Air Arabia's counters open three hours before and close 60 minutes before in Economy and 45 in Business. The airport's own Etihad listing gives a slightly different window.

Where Etihad's own pages and the airport's airline directory differ, we give both; the airline's times and your booking are the ones to follow. In March 2025 Etihad said online check-in opened 48 hours before departure[4]; its check-in page now says 30.
Etihad's June 2024 summer advice said boarding for all its departures closes 20 minutes before departure, in every class[5]. We could not find a current Etihad page that repeats it, so check the time printed on your boarding pass.
What changes if you are flying to the United States?
You clear US immigration and customs in Abu Dhabi, so you need more time. Etihad and the airport both ask for four hours at the airport. Etihad asks you to reach the US pre-clearance facility two hours before departure, or 90 minutes in Business, First and The Residence.
Zayed International has a US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) pre-clearance facility. After check-in and airport security, you follow the signs to it, and a CBP officer carries out the immigration, customs and agriculture inspections before you go to the gate[7]. You then arrive in the United States as a domestic passenger[8].
- At the airport: four hours before departure, according to both Etihad and the airport[1][7].
- At the pre-clearance facility: two hours before departure, or 90 minutes in Business, First and The Residence[1].
- The facility closes one hour before departure, Etihad said in March 2025[4].
- Etihad says its city and home check-in services can be used for flights to the US from Abu Dhabi[2].
When should you allow more time?
In the school holidays, around Eid and in the Hajj season, and whenever your airline or the airport issues an advisory. Check the airport's travel alerts and your airline's flight status on the day, because regional disruption can change schedules at short notice.
Etihad's 2025 advice named the spring break, Eid Al Fitr, the Hajj season, Eid Al Adha and the summer holidays as its busiest periods[4]. Its advisories are announced before each peak, and are usually reported in the UAE press; the airport posts notices on its travel alerts page.
Check on the day (September 2026)
The National reported delays and cancellations at Zayed International and Dubai International on 3 September 2026, after renewed fighting between the United States and Iran, with airlines warning that schedules could change at short notice[15]. Look up your flight's status before you leave home.
Can you check in before you get to the airport?
Yes. Etihad offers online check-in from 30 hours before, city check-in from 24 hours before at desks run by Morafiq, and home check-in from 24 to 5 hours before. Air Arabia runs its own city check-in desks across the UAE. City and home check-in carry a fee.
- City check-in for Etihad (Morafiq): drop your bags and collect your boarding pass from 24 hours before you fly. Etihad lists the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal (open 24 hours), Mussafah (10:00 to 22:00), Al Ain and Madinat Zayed[2]. The airport's own page lists the Cruise Terminal, Yas Mall at the Ferrari World entrance, Mussafah and Al Ain, and says new locations are to be added[9]. There is a charge per passenger, shown on Etihad's page[2].
- Home check-in (Morafiq): from your home, office or hotel in Abu Dhabi between 24 and 5 hours before the flight[2]. Every passenger on the booking, infants and children included, must be there when the agent checks you in[9].
- Air Arabia city check-in: desks in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, each tied to the airport it serves; several Abu Dhabi desks open from 48 to 8 hours before departure[13].
- At the terminal: Etihad's Economy check-in is through doors 1 to 3, with 26 desks and 14 self-service kiosks with biometric scanners[3].
What slows people down at security and passport control?
Unprepared bags. Liquids must be in containers of no more than 100 ml, in one clear resealable bag of about 20 by 20 cm; laptops, tablets and cameras come out; coats and belts come off. Etihad has asked for power banks to travel in the cabin only.
Zayed International's security page asks you to prepare your hand luggage before you reach the checkpoint: liquids, aerosols and gels in containers of 100 ml or less inside a single transparent resealable bag of about 20 cm by 20 cm, large electronics in a separate tray, and coats, jackets and belts removed before the scanner[8]. Before Eid Al Adha 2026 Etihad reminded passengers that power banks, smart bags with removable batteries and e-smoking devices must go in hand luggage only[14].
At passport control, Etihad suggests registering for the e-border gates when you reach the airport, subject to visa requirements[1], and the airport uses biometric checks at points including check-in and the boarding gates[8]. No official page we found says how long the queues take; the airline deadlines above are the ones that count.
How do you get to Zayed International?
By road, or by bus. Etihad puts the airport about 30 minutes' drive from the city centre. Public buses run from the terminal around the clock and take a Hafilat card, not cash. An Airport Express coach links the airport with Ibn Battuta Bus Station in Dubai every hour.
Etihad says the airport is less than 20 minutes' drive from Yas Island and about 30 minutes from the city centre and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque[3]. The airport's A-series buses run 24 hours a day, including the A1 to Al Zahiyah and the A2 along Khalifa Street; you need a Hafilat card, sold at machines near the bus stops, because cash is not accepted on board[10].
For travellers from Dubai, the Airport Express leaves Ibn Battuta Bus Station on the hour, every hour, and is timetabled to reach the airport 90 minutes later[11]. A 04:00 departure from Ibn Battuta is due at 05:30, so for a 09:00 flight the 04:00 coach is the last one that arrives at least three hours before departure.
What does a well-timed departure look like?
- From 30 hours before (Etihad) or 48 (Air Arabia): check in online if your route allows it[2][12].
- From 24 hours before: drop bags at a city check-in desk, if you have booked one[2].
- Three hours before, or four on peak days and for the US: arrive at the terminal[1][4].
- Two hours before (90 minutes in premium cabins): be at US pre-clearance, if you are flying to the United States[1].
- Sixty minutes before (Economy) or 45 (Business and First): check-in closes[1][12].
