When do Kyoto's cherry blossoms usually bloom?
Late March into early April. The Japan Meteorological Agency's averages for 1991 to 2020 put Kyoto's first flowering on 26 March and full bloom on 4 April. Tokyo is a few days ahead, with averages of 24 March and 31 March.
Those dates are not a guess about the whole city. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) watches one chosen specimen tree, mainly of the Somei-Yoshino variety, and records two days each spring[4]. Flowering is the first day at least five or six blossoms are open on that tree; full bloom is the first day about 80% or more of its buds are open[4]. The agency uses 80% because a full 100% cannot be judged on a large tree, and 80% is when people readily feel the tree is in full bloom[5].
Kyoto's specimen tree is chosen by the Kyoto Local Meteorological Observatory, which said in 2013 that it selects the tree inside Nijo Castle[6]. Nijo Castle itself has about 300 cherry trees of about 50 varieties, and gives late March to early April as the season for its Somei-Yoshino[8].
How much do the dates move from year to year?
By about two weeks. Between 2021 and 2026 Kyoto's full bloom fell anywhere from 24 March to 5 April, and first flowering from 16 to 29 March. The earliest flowering on Kyoto's record is 16 March 2021; the latest, 9 April 1984.

| 2021 | 16 March | 26 March | 14 March | 22 March |
| 2022 | 24 March | 30 March | 20 March | 27 March |
| 2023 | 17 March | 24 March | 14 March | 22 March |
| 2024 | 29 March | 5 April | 29 March | 4 April |

| 2026 | 23 March | 30 March | 19 March | 28 March |
Somei-Yoshino specimen trees[1][2]. Kyoto's earliest and latest dates on record are from the Kyoto observatory[3].
Two patterns are worth planning around. First, recent springs have mostly come early: in four of the six years Kyoto reached full bloom before its 4 April average, and in the other two, 2024 and 2025, a day after it. In 2026 it flowered three days early and reached full bloom five days early[1][2]. Second, the step from first flowering to full bloom is quick — by our count from the agency's tables, between 6 and 10 days in Kyoto from 2021 to 2026, against an average gap of 9 days[1][2].
The records show how wide the range can be. Kyoto's earliest full bloom on record is 24 March 2023 and its latest 17 April 1965[3].
How should you plan the dates from the UAE?
Book around the averages and the recent range, not a forecast, and stay long enough to catch a shift either way. From 2021 to 2026 Kyoto's full bloom always fell within the 13 days from 24 March to 5 April.
Forecasts are published during the season and move as it develops: JNTO's cherry blossom page carries a forecast from the Japan Weather Association and says it is subject to change[18] (from the UAE the page opens in Arabic; its language menu has English), and the dates are only settled when the agency observes them. So choose your travel dates from the averages and the recent range, then use the forecasts to decide which days to give to the blossoms.
Elevation matters within the city region, too. The Kyoto City Tourism Association's cherry blossom calendar tracks individual spots through eight stages, from buds only to blossoms gone, and notes that elevation can change when a spot starts to bloom[9]. Its 2026 updates ended on 10 April[9].
Where do people see the blossoms in Kyoto?
Across the city. The Kyoto City Tourism Association's own list includes To-ji, Maruyama Park, Heian Jingu, Tenryu-ji, Hirano Shrine, the Nakaragi Path, Arashiyama Park, the Philosopher's Path and Daigo-ji, among others.
- Temples and shrines: To-ji, Heian Jingu, Tenryu-ji, Hirano Shrine, Saimyo-ji, Daigo-ji and Myoren-ji[10].
- Parks and gardens: Maruyama Park, Arashiyama Park (Kameyama area) and the Kyoto Prefectural Botanical Gardens[10].
- Walks: the Philosopher's Path and the Nakaragi Path[10].
- Nijo Castle, about 300 cherry trees of some 50 varieties, where the observatory said in 2013 that it chooses its specimen tree[8][6].
Some temples and shrines open specially and hold evening light-ups during the season, according to the tourism association[9]; the schedules are announced for each year.

How do you avoid the crowds, and respect the city?
Go early, and follow the city's guidance. The Kyoto City Tourism Association suggests Arashiyama early in the morning, and notes that Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6:00. Never photograph geiko or maiko without permission, or enter private property.
- Timing: the association recommends going to Arashiyama early in the morning, and visiting Kiyomizu-dera, which opens at 6:00, when there are few people[11].
- Geiko and maiko: do not touch, chase or photograph them without permission, and do not enter private property; the association also says photography is only permitted in designated areas[12].
- In Gion: residents' associations ask visitors not to stop, touch or follow geiko and maiko, not to take photos without permission, and not to block the road to take pictures. Their message lists the legal penalties for obstruction, trespass and litter[13].
- Hanami picnics: spots are first come, first served; take your rubbish home, and never break off branches or pull flowers[17].
Congestion
The association suggests exploring less-visited places to avoid congestion, and "hands-free travel": using luggage delivery or storage rather than carrying bags around the city[12].
What is the weather like in late March and April?
Cool, and often wet. The agency's 1991–2020 averages for Kyoto are a daily high of 14.1 °C and low of 4.3 °C in March, and 20.1 °C and 9.2 °C in April, with about 106 mm and 117 mm of rain in those months.
Kyoto climate averages, 1991–2020
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainfall | Sunshine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March | 14.1 °C | 4.3 °C | 106.2 mm | 155.4 hours |
| April | 20.1 °C | 9.2 °C | 117.0 mm | 177.3 hours |

The tourism association's clothing advice for March is a coat with some thickness, a sweater and warm layers; for April, a jacket that is easy to carry and a sweater or long-sleeved top[14]. For a traveller leaving the UAE's spring, that is a proper change of wardrobe.
How do you get to Kyoto?
Through Kansai International Airport (KIX) or Osaka Itami. From KIX, the Haruka limited express runs directly to Kyoto in about 80 minutes; from Itami, a bus takes about 50 to 55 minutes.
Kyoto City's travel guide names Kansai International and Osaka Itami as Kyoto's airports, gives about 80 minutes for direct Haruka trains from KIX to Kyoto (80 to 100 minutes in all), about 100 minutes by airport limousine bus, and about 130 minutes from Tokyo on the Nozomi shinkansen[15]. JR West publishes the Haruka timetable[16].

Questions travellers ask
What is the best week to see the cherry blossoms in Kyoto?
On the averages, the week around 4 April, when Kyoto's specimen tree reaches full bloom in a typical year[2]. From 2021 to 2026 full bloom came between 24 March and 5 April, so a stay across the end of March and the start of April is the safer choice.
What does full bloom mean?
It is the Japan Meteorological Agency's term for the first day about 80% or more of the buds on the specimen tree are open; flowering is the first day at least five or six blossoms are open[4].
Do the blossoms come earlier in Tokyo than in Kyoto?
Usually by a few days. The 1991–2020 averages are 24 March (flowering) and 31 March (full bloom) in Tokyo, against 26 March and 4 April in Kyoto[1][2].
