How does a connection at Hamad International work?
Everything happens in one terminal. You go to the transfer halls at concourses A, B, C or D, through a security check of your hand luggage, and on to your gate. Do not follow the Arrivals signs unless you mean to leave. Boarding gates close 20 minutes before departure.
Hamad International describes itself as an integrated terminal where passengers arrive, transfer and depart in the same building. After leaving the aircraft you go straight to the transfer halls at concourses A, B, C and D, where hand luggage is screened for prohibited items; confiscated items cannot be retrieved[1]. The transfer desks handle boarding passes, missed connections and rebooking, and the airport warns: do not follow the signs to Arrivals, and do not be late, because boarding gates close 20 minutes before departure[1].
No page we opened from the airport or Qatar Airways publishes a minimum connecting time, so rely on the connection your airline sold you on one ticket, and leave more time on separate tickets.
What can you do without leaving the airport?
Walk in the Orchard, an indoor tropical garden under a glass roof; rest in a quiet room; book the Oryx Airport Hotel, inside the transit area, for as little as five hours; swim, train or have a treatment at the Vitality wellbeing centre; and look at the airport's art.

Can you see Doha on a transit tour?
Yes, with six hours or more, through Discover Qatar, Qatar Airways' destination management company. Its tours include a three-hour coach tour of Doha and a four-hour private desert trip to the Inland Sea; with four hours, an airport art tour. Book online or at its desk in the Duty-Free Plaza.
Discover Qatar's transit options, as Hamad International lists them
| Option | Minimum transit | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Discover Doha | 6 hours[1] | A three-hour coach tour: the Corniche, the Museum of Islamic Art, the dhow harbour, Katara Cultural Village and Souq Waqif[1] |
| Desert and Inland Sea | 6 hours[1] | A four-hour private tour to Khor Al Adaid[1] |
| Shuttle bus | 6 hours[1] | Pick-up and drop-off to the National Museum of Qatar, the Museum of Islamic Art or Doha Beach Club[1] |
| Discover Doha by Air | 6 hours[1] | A 45-minute light-aircraft flight over the city[1] |
| The Art of the Airport | 4 hours[1] | An airport-based tour of the art installations[1] |
Discover Qatar says it handles the transit arrangements and brings you back for your flight[1]. The tours that leave the airport mean entering Qatar; see below.
Will Qatar Airways give you a hotel?
If it has no flight to your next destination within eight hours of your arrival, you may qualify for its complimentary transit accommodation: a four- or five-star hotel and transfers, booked at least three days ahead. For longer, planned breaks of 12 to 96 hours, it sells Qatar Stopover packages.
- Who qualifies: there must be no Qatar Airways flight to your next destination within eight hours of your arrival in Doha, and at least one flight must be marketed and operated by Qatar Airways; select fare types only, at the airline's discretion[5].
- What you get: a room in a four- or five-star hotel and return transfers; book at least three days before departure, or ask at the transfer desk if it is later[5].
- Your bags: checked bags can only be collected at your final destination under this service[5].
- Not available to: children travelling alone, and passengers who have requested special services[5].
- Qatar Stopover: paid packages of up to four nights for transits of 12 to 96 hours[6].
A hotel outside the airport means passing Qatari immigration, and Qatar Airways says a confirmed booking does not guarantee entry[5]. Check your own passport with Visit Qatar's visa check[8] and our visa desk.
Can you go into Doha on your own?
If you can enter Qatar, yes: ask at a transfer desk rather than following the Arrivals signs. The Doha Metro's Red Line runs from the airport to the city centre; check its hours on the operator's site, since Visit Qatar notes it closes on Friday mornings for prayers.
Hamad International asks passengers who want to leave during a long stopover to go to the transfer desks for help, and to confirm the immigration requirements before they travel[1]. The Metro station at the airport runs services seven days a week to Doha's main districts[4]; Visit Qatar says the Red Line connects the airport's Terminal 1 with the city centre, and that the Metro closes on Friday mornings for prayers[7]. Neither gives the timetable; both point to the Doha Metro's own site and app[4][7].
Allow for immigration twice and security on the way back, and remember the 20-minute gate closure[1]. Our Doha guide covers the city itself.

Does Qatar Airways give a free hotel on a long layover?
Its complimentary transit accommodation applies when there is no Qatar Airways flight to your next destination within eight hours of your arrival, on select fares, booked at least three days ahead[5].
How long a layover do I need for a Discover Qatar tour?
Six hours or more for the tours that leave the airport, and four hours for the airport art tour[1].
Does the Doha Metro go to the airport?

- : The short answer said Qatar Airways gives a free hotel when it has no onward flight within eight hours, without saying that this applies only on select fares. It now says so.
