How early should you get to Sharjah Airport?
At least three hours before departure. That is what Sharjah Airport told passengers for July and August 2026, when it expected about 3 million of them, and for the New Year weekend before. It also asks you to confirm your flight details with your airline before you set off.
In its summer 2026 release, Sharjah Airport said it expected approximately 3 million passengers and about 19,000 flights in July and August, and advised passengers to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled departure, to check their flight details with their airline, to make sure their travel documents are valid and to read the baggage rules before travelling[1]. It gave the same three-hour advice ahead of the New Year weekend at the end of 2025, Khaleej Times reported[14].
The airport's departures page is more relaxed: it says most airlines' check-in counters open at least two hours before a flight, and some offer online check-in up to 48 hours before[2]. Treat that as the least you can expect from any airline, and the three hours as the plan.
When do the Air Arabia counters open and close?
They open three hours before departure. Check-in closes 60 minutes before departure in Economy and 45 minutes before in Business. Online check-in opens 48 hours before. Other airlines at Sharjah set their own times, so check yours.
Air Arabia's published check-in times, before scheduled departure
From Air Arabia's check-in page. Air Arabia also says some airports in its network do not yet offer online check-in, and that some do not accept digital boarding passes[11]. We could not find an Air Arabia page that states when its boarding gates close, so we do not give a time.
Air Arabia names Sharjah International as the first of its three main hubs, with Casablanca and Alexandria[13]. It is not the only airline here. On the day we checked, Sharjah Airport's departures board also listed flights by Qatar Airways, Air India Express, IndiGo, Pegasus Airlines, SalamAir, Ethiopian Airlines and Royal Jordanian, among others[2]. Their deadlines are on their own websites and your booking.
Can you check in before you reach the airport?
Yes, in three ways. Air Arabia runs city check-in desks across the UAE, the airport runs a home check-in service in Sharjah City, and online check-in opens 48 hours ahead. The airport says city check-in lets you go straight to passport control when you arrive.
- Air Arabia city check-in: desks in Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, each tied to the airport it serves. Air Arabia's locations page gives a bag-drop window of 48 to 8 hours before departure for the Sharjah desks at Matajer Al Mussala and Muweilah, both open from 09:00 to 22:00 (Muweilah closes from 12:00 to 14:00 on Fridays), and for the Dubai desk at Shindagha City Centre, which takes passengers flying from Sharjah and Abu Dhabi[12]. Its check-in FAQ says up to 36 hours before[11], so check the time for the desk you plan to use. There is a fee per passenger.
- Straight to passport control: Sharjah Airport encouraged Air Arabia passengers to use city check-in so that they could complete check-in in advance and go directly to passport control on arrival, according to Khaleej Times[14].
- Home check-in (Sharjah Airport): available in Sharjah City; staff check you in at home and your bags are returned to you at your final destination. It runs daily from 11:00 to 23:00, and you can schedule it up to six hours before your flight. Book online, through the SHJ Home Check In app or by phone; the packages and prices are on the airport's page[3].
- At the terminal: self-service kiosks let you print your boarding pass and bag tag and drop your bag yourself[4].
What baggage rule catches people out at Sharjah?
The flat-surface rule. Sharjah Airport accepts checked baggage only if it has at least one flat surface; bags without one must be repacked into an approved cardboard box. Two bags taped together are refused, and oversized items go to a separate counter.
The airport's baggage acceptance policy, in force since 4 December 2018, says every checked bag must have at least one flat surface[5]. Bags without one have to be repacked into an approved cardboard box, which only Hala Services is authorised to supply, and repacking is normally charged. Bags tied with rope or string may still be refused, and two items taped together are not accepted at check-in[5].
What happens at passport control and security?
At Sharjah you clear passport control first and security screening after it. Liquids must be in containers of 100 ml or less inside a clear resealable bag of 20 by 20 cm. Medicines and baby food are carried separately, and you may be asked to prove what a medicine is.
Sharjah Airport's safety page says security screening comes after immigration. It asks you to take liquids, aerosols and gels out of your hand luggage, put phones, laptops, tablets, keys and coins in a separate tray, and remove coats, shoes and belts[6]. Liquids are limited to containers of up to 100 ml, in a clear resealable 20 cm by 20 cm plastic bag shown at the X-ray point; medicines and special foods such as baby food go separately, and you may be asked for a prescription or a doctor's letter[6].
The airport has Smart Gates at passport control. For departing passengers the steps are: put your passport photo page on the reader, scan your boarding pass, step into the gate, and look at the camera with glasses and hats removed[7]. The page does not say who is eligible; our guide to Dubai International covers the rules Dubai Airports publishes for its own gates.
How do you get to Sharjah Airport?
By road. The airport is 13 km south-east of Sharjah city and, by its own figures, 15 km from central Dubai, about 20 minutes' drive on average. Sharjah Taxi runs around the clock, and Air Arabia coaches link the airport with Dubai and other emirates.
Sharjah Airport gives its location as 13 km south-east of Sharjah and 15 km from central Dubai, a drive of 20 minutes on average[8]; allow more at busy times. Sharjah Taxi runs 24 hours a day from the arrivals level, with metered fares and an airport surcharge on trips from the airport, and family and ladies-only taxis are available[10].
Air Arabia runs coaches between the airport and Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah. The Dubai coach uses the Al Ghurair Centre; the airport's page gives its hours as 10:30 to 23:30 towards the airport and 08:00 to 23:30 from it[9]. Check the timetable linked from that page before relying on a late departure.
What does a well-timed departure from Sharjah look like?
- Up to 48 hours before: check in online, if your airport and route allow it[11].
- Between 48 and 8 hours before (or up to 36, by Air Arabia's FAQ): use a city check-in desk, or book home check-in up to six hours before[12][11][3].
- Three hours before: arrive at the terminal, as the airport advises[1].
- Sixty minutes before (Economy) or 45 (Business): Air Arabia's check-in closes[11].
